Young lose out in housing wealth boom

Three quarters of housing wealth in Britain is held by the over-50s, according to research revealing the generational divide in the property market.

Such homeowners hold £2.8rn of equity. The over-65s own 43% of housing wealth, £1.6tn, the study by the estate agent Savills found.

Lawrence Bowles, a research analyst at the company, said: “The extent to which wealth is concentrated in older hands is something we have not seen in a long time.”
