The impact of millions of Britons working remotely could require a total rewiring of the country.
Professor Nick Bloom, an economist at Stanford University – who works from home – predicted that the infrastructure of the country would have to be reworked to cope with what has become a permanent shift.
He added that big pay rises would be needed to retain teachers and nurses who are unable to work from home, while a collapse in commuting could lead to Beeching-style cuts to the railways.
