Wednesday evenings are fast becoming the new party night in city centres as the working from home revolution shrinks the working week.
Bar and restaurant owners say Wednesday is the new Thursday, and Thursday the new Friday, because the overwhelming majority of office staff stay at home on Friday.
Data from Freespace, a technology company that has 120,000 workplace sensors in offices across the country, shows that fewer than 15% of desks were occupied last Friday. However, an average of 40% were filled on Wednesday and Thursday, the highest level since the pandemic began. Before Covid, average occupancy was 60%, suggesting that at least two-thirds of workers are back at their desks midweek but only a quarter on Fridays.
