Sophie van Oosterom, the former global real estate head at asset manager Schroders, has taken up her new role overseeing real estate for the manager behind a giant Canadian pension fund.
Van Oosterom has joined Canada Pension Plan Investment Board as managing director and head of real estate, working from its London office at 40 Portman Square, W1. She replaces Peter Ballon.
The group’s real estate holdings sit in its broader real assets division, which had net investments of $141.2bn (£80bn) according to its most recent financial statements, for the second quarter of its 2025 financial year.
Its UK holdings include investments in Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield’s Westfield Stratford City and Hammerson’s Bullring shopping centre in Birmingham. Last year the firm partnered with Kennedy Wilson to launch a £1bn single-family rental housing joint venture in the UK.
Before joining Schroders in 2020, van Oosterom was European chief executive and chief investment officer at CBRE Investment Management.
At Schroders, she was replaced as head of real estate by Nick Montgomery.
