Unaffordable rents force refugees to return to Ukraine

Families who fled war-torn Ukraine are returning from England because they cannot find affordable homes to rent.

Ukrainian refugees have reported a lack of government support after relationships with initial Homes for Ukraine sponsors had broken down. More than 6,000 Ukrainian households in England are now classed as homeless, including 4,200 with dependent children.

As of last month, around 500 Ukrainian families were recorded to be living in temporary accommodation allocated by local authorities. The charity Sunflower Sisters said that of the 14,000 families it has assisted since the war began it has seen “around five to 10 every week having to go back” to Ukraine.
