This latest issue, on which we have partnered with Savills and Shoosmiths, offers a strong focus on the growth of the UK life sciences sector and the role that vibrant innovation districts could play in the recovery of UK cities.
It’s an encouraging picture – and not just for London, the South East and East of England regions. Hotspots are emerging in the North East and North West, with the creation of the right kind of space playing a crucial role.
But there can be no ignoring the fact that some of our biggest cities are finding themselves badly thrown off course as coronavirus infection rates rise rapidly again. Our interviews with leaders in Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham lay bare some of the economic impacts. The need for more central government support is a common thread.
With added uncertainties surrounding Brexit, the future of the high street, the absence of office workers and a radical shake-up of the planning system, our regional cities have plenty to contend with.
Yet despite – and because of – the pandemic, this latest edition finds them in fighting spirit as transformative housing, regeneration and infrastructure schemes move forward. As one regional developer put it: “Our mantra is to keep building”.
