The Halo Effect: cities, post-pandemic life and an update from Silicon Valley

Another week, another round-up of content from Halo, EG’s tech and innovation arm bringing you the latest technology news, trends and analysis.

We kicked things off with EG’s weekly We’re Still Here podcast which included an interview with Nathan Pierce, programme director for the Greater London Authority’s Sharing Cities scheme. He revealed how working on a pan-European programme exploring the ways in which smart city solutions can be scaled up to national and international levels has taken quite a turn in the midst of a pandemic. Tune in to hear more about how cities including London, Lisbon and Milan have been trialling technology and smart solutions over the past two years which have now been refocused to address issues around everything from return-to-work strategies to how we create healthier cities for the future. And if you are looking for more than just the tech angle you are in luck as we also use the podcast to delve into current, wider market trends and news stories.

Not one but two podcasts this week as we spoke to Matterport’s RJ Pittman and James Morris-Manuel about the impact Covid-19 has had on the spatial data capture company. And it has been significant. “In the month of April 2020, we added more new customers than in the entire first eight years of the company,” said Pittman. And while a pandemic would not be anyone’s chosen path to success, he adds that the current situation has fast-tracked a trend that is here to stay as virtual viewings become an intrinsic element of client, occupier and investor demands. For more on this plus an update on life and work in Silicon Valley as Pittman calls in from the Bay Area, listen to the full podcast here.
