Landlords could be forced to give their tenants three-year contracts under government plans to help renters “put down roots” and build communities.
James Brokenshire, the communities secretary, said that the proposals, now in consultation, would allow tenants to leave before three years if they wished but give them the right to stay. Critics said that tenants could still be forced out by rent increases.
In the UK, renters stay in a home for an average of four years but 80 per cent of contracts are for a minimum period of six or 12 months.
