Stockport kicks off search for partner for latest phase of £1bn regen
Stockport Council has kicked off its search for a partner to draw up a strategic regeneration framework for the next stage of its £1bn regeneration programme.
The framework will provide a masterplan for the 280-acre site to the east of Stockport town centre, which has the potential to deliver up to 4,000 high-quality mixed-tenure homes.
The plans for Town Centre East will build on the successful delivery of Town Centre West by the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, a joint venture between Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, Stockport Council and Homes England, and represent a doubling of the council’s housing delivery ambitions for the town centre.

The council is inviting proposals from teams of consultants by 23 August, with the aim of selecting a partner in early September.
Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation was established five years ago and since then has delivered 1,200 homes alongside a transport interchange, a two-acre park and more than 170,000 sq ft of grade-A office space.
Mark Hunter, leader of Stockport Council, said: “With thousands of new homes already created, as well as the new Interchange and town-centre park for residents to enjoy, the potential and vision in Stockport is unmatched. The progress we have made has been incredible and continues at pace. I look forward to seeing plans progress with the appointed consultant team.”
Eamonn Boylan, interim chair of Stockport MDC, added: “This latest phase of regeneration will build on the success of Town Centre West, a redevelopment spearheaded by Stockport MDC that has underwritten the town’s upward trajectory in recent years.
“We welcome the council’s growing ambition in its plans for Town Centre East, look forward to working with the consultant team developing the strategic regeneration framework and await supporting the project as it develops.”
