Singaporean investor makes Starr hire for UK push

Singaporean investor Shorea Capital has appointed a new lead to drive its investment into the UK.

The firm has appointed Adam Starr as UK managing director. In the newly created role, Starr will lead Shorea’s UK business, overseeing key functions including investment and asset management while acquiring and deepening relationships with key stakeholders.

He will be based in the firm’s London office and joins from Redevco, where he was most recently head of global transaction management.

Backed by Hwa Hong Corporation, a Singapore-headquartered property investment company, and prominent Asian family offices, Shorea Capital manages real estate and investment assets for family offices, ultra-high-net-worth individuals and institutional investors across public and private markets.

Ong Eng Yaw, managing director and co-founder of Shorea Capital, said: “The UK real estate market remains an attractive destination for Asian capital seeking to diversify, especially since we may be at a turning point in the interest rate cycle. The emphasis on corporate responsibility for ESG issues and new climate-related disclosure requirements and regulations in the UK present interesting brown-to-green commercial real estate opportunities.”

He added: “Adam brings a wealth of real estate knowledge and a proven track record of success. We believe his experience and deep relationships in the UK will strengthen Shorea Capital’s position as we expand our presence and portfolio in this market.”

The firm was established in 2018 and has been involved in residential, commercial and mixed-use real estate projects across Singapore, Australia and the UK. The firm currently has some US$1bn (£810m) of assets under management.

In London, Shorea Capital is currently working with Native Land and Stiff + Trevillion Architects to reposition the former Lipton Tea Company headquarters at 188 City Road, EC1. The repositioned office scheme is aiming to achieve BREEAM Excellent and EPC A ratings upon completion.
