Michael Gove is a “monster” for rubbishing green policies while fully understanding the scale and urgency of the climate crisis, says former minister Zac Goldsmith.
The former international environment minister, who resigned from his post in June, said the prime minister “has no authentic interest” in the environment, but the levelling up secretary “understands these issues” but still dismissed environmental policies as a “religious crusade”.
Goldsmith said: “I don’t think you can understand and care about the gravity of this issue, and at the same time, be willing to take your foot off the accelerator for political expediency. I just think that would require you to be a monster.”
