Retail suffering from long Covid, ONS figures show

Covid’s impact on UK retail was worse than previously thought, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics.

In the second quarter of 2022, the contribution of the retail sector to gross domestic product remained almost 15% smaller than in the final quarter of 2019, before the onset of Covid-19.

According to official figures, the UK is the only G7 country whose economic output is still below 2019 levels.
