Retail sales fall at fastest pace since lockdown

Retail sales in Britain have suffered a further slowdown this month, falling at the sharpest pace in three years.

The CBI’s monthly retail sales balance, a gauge of sales compared with a year previously, has fallen to -50 in January from -32 in December. It is the lowest reading since January 2021, when the country was in the third Covid lockdown.
