High-profile schemes could be scrapped as critics urge developers to refurbish instead.

Last week Marks & Spencer faced criticism for its plans to redevelop its Oxford Street flagship, requiring 2.4m trees to be planted to offset the carbon.

Now the City of London is facing pressure over the Salisbury Square development, which an independent academic has said will cost 19,000 tonnes more CO2 than a refurbishment and extension.
