Premier Inn’s parent company Whitbread has acquired a 30-year leasehold for the mixed-use scheme, which was designed by SimpsonHaugh and Partners.
The development will also include 66 apartments, community space, retail units, half an acre of gardens and a ground-floor Whitbread-branded restaurant.
Planning permission for the site was granted to Rockwell Property by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in October this year. Construction is due to commence next summer.
Rockwell founder Donal Mulryan said: “Premier Inn’s emphasis on being a force for good aligns perfectly with our aspiration to deliver exceptional schemes that make a positive and lasting difference.”
Louise Woodruff, acquisitions manager at Premier Inn, said: “Aside from our hotels at Gatwick and Heathrow airports, this 400-bedroom hotel will be the largest Premier Inn in London, which reflects the strong demand we’re experiencing in east London, especially around Canary Wharf.”
In October, Whitbread announced plans to expand the hotel chain in the UK and Germany, after its sale of Costa Coffee to Coca-Cola. This followed plans to build more than 1,000 new bedrooms, having secured nearly 400 deals in seaside locations in the UK.
