PM plans to axe 90,000 civil servants

Boris Johnson wants to cut the civil service by a fifth to free up billions of pounds for tax cuts.

The prime minister said last night he wanted to cut the ranks down to pre-Brexit levels, which would mean around 91,000 civil servants being dismissed.

Numbers have swelled from around 380,000 in 2016 to 470,000 as central government went on a hiring spree to deal with both Brexit and then Covid.
