Plans in to revamp Brick Lane’s historic Truman Brewery
Grow Places has submitted detailed plans for the redevelopment of underused parts of Brick Lane’s iconic 350-year-old Truman Brewery site to Tower Hamlets Council.
The mixed-use development spans more than 380,000 sq ft of floorspace, with eight new and retained buildings, spaces for local job and training opportunities, enhanced public realm and affordable and family homes.
The team behind the plans, including architectural firms Carmody Groarke, Morris + Company, Henley Halebrown, Chris Dyson Architects and Buckley Gray Yeoman, has held three rounds of pre-planning public consultation since December 2023.

The final proposed scheme is divided into blocks, to be completed in phases.
Development is being brought forward on parts of the site that are vacant or to replace low-value, underused buildings, with other, successful parts of the site being improved by light-touch refurbishment or sensitive, high-quality extension, or left untouched.
The submitted plans will deliver buildings that include community uses, exhibition and events space, a creative hub, a microbrewery, food markets, affordable workspace and mixed-tenure homes.
Tom Larsson, founder of Grow Places, said: “We are proud to work in partnership with the Truman Brewery and local people in Brick Lane, Spitalfields and ‘Banglatown’. Together, we aim to evolve the site in an authentic and sustainable way, so that the Truman Brewery continues as a vibrant and diverse place open to locals, workers, Londoners and visitors from all over the world. This is an ongoing and collaborative effort to shape the future of this historic site for all.”
Amr Assaad, director of Buckley Gray Yeoman, added: “Brick Lane is special. We, like many Londoners, cherish it as a place of fond memories and strong connections. Presently, the masterplan site is largely detached from these sentiments. Our proposals provide an opportunity to transform this brownfield site into a space that future generations will embrace to become another chapter in the Brick Lane story.”
