The chairwoman of the board pay committee at Persimmon left MPs incredulous yesterday when she was unable to give basic details of staff pay arrangements at Britain’s biggest housebuilding group.
Marion Sears confessed to the business, energy and industrial strategy committee that she did not know the multiple of chief executive pay to average pay and argued that the number was “irrelevant” anyway.
The MPs were investigating rewards at the top after one of the biggest chief executive payouts in British corporate history — the £45m package to Persimmon’s Jeff Fairburn.
