Ministers have ruled out financial support for companies, including hospitality and retail businesses, despite introducing fresh Covid restrictions.
Business lobby groups had called for extra state help to cover losses caused by the measures, with many pubs and restaurants already reporting a rise in cancellations.
But Treasury officials said there would be no further support for businesses during the so-called Plan B restrictions for England that the prime minister announced on Wednesday.
