Hotel makeover for Newcastle city centre listed buildings set for go-ahead
Planning officers have recommended that the council gives the go-ahead for redevelopment of three Grade II listed buildings in Newcastle.
The buildings include the former central police station, magistrates’ court and fire station, which are expected to be partially demolished and extended for conversion to a five-star hotel.
The fire station has been vacant for over 15 years, the police station for over 10 years and the magistrates’ court since 2019.

Taras Properties, the developer behind the project, is proposing to create a 74,185 sq ft hotel, with 90 bedrooms, a 7,449 sq ft restaurant, two bars, a dining room and a function room.
The plans also include a new circulation core and walkways to link the buildings together.
Total on-site construction has been estimated to cost around £20m.
The site is in the city centre and forms a part of the wider regeneration of the East Pilgrim Street area.
No objections have been raised with regards to the proposed scheme during the consultation period.
Avison Young advised Taras Properties on planning.
