New rental homes at an all-time high

The number of rental homes registered with the National House Building Council reached the highest levels on record last quarter. There were 13,455 new private rented, social rented and shared ownership homes registered in the second quarter of the year. This was a 7.4% increase on the same period last year. Some 29,993 market sale homes brought the quarterly total to 43,438. The NHBC said this was the highest quarterly figure since Q4 2007, when it reported 43,525 new homes. The largest year-on-year growth was in London, which saw 6,000 new homes registered, compared to 2,984 the previous year, and in the North West and Merseyside, with 5,818 new homes against 3,963.
