The number of new homes has plunged, according to government data.
The number of energy performance certificates issued to newly-built houses – a key forward indicator of housebuilding completions – fell by 13.5% on the year in the quarter to June, according to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.
The fall to 58,000 new homes was the sharpest in 10 years, barring the 60% drop at the start of the pandemic, when housebuilders were forced to down tools.
