Housebuilders should be forced to set up an ombudsman, MPs said, after homebuyers were hit by a wave of scandals over poor-quality homes and leaseholds.
Setting out proposals for the body, MPs on an all-party parliamentary group said a new ombudsman could help disgruntled homeowners resolve disputes over shoddy workmanship more quickly when they bought newly-built homes, and that it should be mandatory for housebuilders to join.
Eddie Hughes, the Conservative MP for Walsall North and chairman of the group, said consumers “desperately” needed “greater leverage” when it came to tackling developers.
