MP slams Haringey ‘rabbit hutch homes’
A London MP has spoken out over plans to turn Haringey Council offices into 171 micro-flats, branding them “rabbit hutch homes”.
Catherine West, Labour MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, said she will formally object to billionaire Andreas Panayiotou’s application for the office-to-resi conversion at Alexandra House, N11.
The application would see the bulk of flats at 26 sq m, significantly below the minimum size standards of 37 sq m.

It follows an unsuccessful application from Panayiotou’s Ability Developments at the end of last year.
West said: “These rabbit hutch homes are worlds away from the high quality, genuinely affordable homes Wood Green so desperately needs. I formally objected to the plans last time and will be doing so again.
“The Tory Lib Dem decision to relax the rules on office to residential developments has been a disaster. It’s taken power out of the local community’s hands, allowed a few people to get very rich, pushed up prices and left a legacy of low quality, tiny homes often not fit to live in.”
The application for the change of use can be viewed at the Haringey planning portal, reference number HGY/2020/0225.
Consultation on the new plans will run until 20 February, with a decision date required by 20 March.
