MoD plans 1,300 homes at Yorkshire barracks
The Ministry of Defence has announced plans to deliver 1,300 homes on former barracks sites in Yorkshire.
The Defence Infrastructure Organisation has partnered with Homes England to develop the homes at the Claro and Deverell Barracks in Ripon.
The site is the first to be progressed as part of a new partnership. The duo are working with stakeholders Ripon City Council and Harrogate Borough Council.

They are developing a masterplan for the region and intends to submit a planning application before the end of the year.
Catherine Davies, DIO head of estates, said: “The MoD has an ongoing commitment to invest in a more fit-for-purpose Defence estate that will better support the Armed Forces’ future needs. This brings an exciting opportunity to deliver benefits to the local community on the Ripon barracks site once it becomes surplus.”
Housing minister Kit Malthouse said: “We’re pulling every lever to deliver homes where they’re needed across the country, including transforming the site of the old Ripon barracks into more than 1,000 new homes for the people of North Yorkshire.”
The MoD is aiming to reduce the size of its estate by 30% by 2040. It is seeking to deliver 55,000 homes across a £32bn estate by 2020. This was laid out in the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review.
According to the National Audit Office, the MoD is expected to deliver 22,847 of these homes between 2020 and 2025, and will fall short of its target by 12,592, with 23% of the homes not delivered.
