Manchester’s Project 500 hits planning milestones

The first phase of Project 500, a programme to increase the number of affordable homes across Manchester using council-owned land, has hit two early milestones.

The latest planning application of this phase has been submitted by housing association One Manchester for a site off Moston Lane. The proposals feature 29 Manchester living-rent homes and represent the last batch of 357 homes for initial Project 500 programme sites.

The scheme comprises a mix of 18 one-bedroom cottage flats across three separate buildings, along with seven two-bedroom houses and four four-bedroom houses. Each of the houses will have private gardens and the flats will share a landscaped rear garden.

One Manchester is also currently on site at two other Project 500 schemes, including Blackwin Street in Gorton, which will deliver seven new homes, and a further site on Brigham Street in Openshaw, that will deliver 24 homes.

The development at a site in Cheetham Hill has also been granted planning permission for 70 new homes. The project spans 26 flats ranging in size from one to two bedrooms, alongside two, three and four-bedroom houses on Alderford Parade and Dinnington Avenue.

The scheme will be delivered by housing association Mosscare St Vincents, which is also on site with two other Project 500 developments, both in Harpurhey, which will deliver a combined 46 homes.

Gavin White, executive member for housing and development at Manchester City Council, said: “Project 500 is one of the innovative ways that we are working with housing partners in the city to meet our ambitious housing strategy target to make sure at least 10,000 social, council and genuinely affordable homes are built up to 2032.”

The second phase of Project 500 is already underway and is expected to exceed the target of 500 new affordable homes delivered through the scheme.
