Developers that do not sign the contract risk having their right to build removed by the secretary of state for levelling up. Michael Gove said he would be writing to local authorities to advise them not to accept applications from developers that refused to sign. However, he added that those willing to sign but mired in legal considerations would be given a “grace period” to allow them to comply.
Just seven developers remain on the “non-compliant” list: Abbey Developments, Avant, Dandara, Emerson Group’s Jones Homes, Galliard Homes, Inland Homes and Rydon Homes.
The contract, which follows on from a pledge signed by developers last year, requires developers to:
Take responsibility for all necessary work to address life-critical fire-safety defects arising from design and construction of buildings 11m and over in height that they developed or refurbished over the last 30 years in EnglandKeep residents in those buildings informed on progress towards meeting this commitmentReimburse taxpayers for money spent on remediating their buildings.
