South Bank Colleges has been given the go ahead for a new campus and student accommodation at Nine Elms.
Lambeth Council has approved a hybrid application that will see more than 400,000 sq ft of development including new college facilities, shared workspace and 272 student bedrooms.
The development will replace the old college buildings spread over 160,000 sq ft, which are no longer fit for purpose.
The first phase of the redevelopment will be the Nine Elms science technology engineering arts and mathematics (STEAM) centre, backed by a £20m grant from the Mayor of London.
Redevelopment of the college has been on the cards for years. Lambeth College previously entered into a jv with Carillion in 2017, but after the collapse of the construction giant it pulled the plans, and the college has since been moved under South Bank Colleges.
The 272 student bedrooms will replace previous earlier plans for 95 residential units.
It comes as student accommodation developers pile into the area, attracted by the central location and transport links.
Downing Developments is developing around 1,000 bedrooms across two sites. Urbanest will operate CLS Holdings’ 454-bedroom scheme in Vauxhall Square, and Unite is in talks to pick up the Belmont Tower site, replacing a £300m luxury resi scheme.
According to Lambeth Council there are currently 948 student units under construction, on top of 4,000 completed units.
