King’s Cross goes carbon-neutral amid offsetting drive
The King’s Cross Estate has announced that it has become carbon-neutral, after a drive to make energy supplies renewable and to make up for operational emissions via carbon offsetting.
The estate, developed by Argent and managed by King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership, said energy to the estate is 100% renewable, via green tariffs and agreements with its energy providers.
It also said it would offset all of its operational emissions and all past emissions have been offset via third-party offsetting projects.
The estate will also offset all embodied carbon from its new and future buildings by purchasing around 338ha of pastureland, on which more than 600,000 broadleaf natives and commercial pine trees will be planted.
King’s Cross follows Grosvenor in its offsetting plans, which last month announced that it would become entirely carbon-neutral by 2025.
However, concerns remain among environmental groups over carbon offsetting as a practice. Organisations such as Greenpeace have warned that companies must make genuine reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to effectively tackle the climate crisis.
Robert Evans, chief executive of King’s Cross and joint managing partner at Argent, said: “From the very beginning we have worked to reduce carbon emissions and low-carbon thinking has been central to our approach.
“This is demonstrated by early decisions to invest in our district energy network and deliver combined heat and power to the whole estate, and our development of more BREEAM Outstanding buildings than any other destination in the UK.”
