Jenrick extends rental eviction ban

Housing secretary Robert Jenrick has extended the ban of rental evictions for four weeks. The move has seen renters protected from legal evictions for six months during the pandemic. The government has also introduced a new six-month notice period for evictions, which aims to support tenants over the winter. It will exclude cases raising serious issues involving anti-social behaviour, criminal activity or where landlords have not received rent for over a year. Jenrick said: “I know this year has been challenging and all of us are still living with the effects of Covid-19. That is why today I am announcing a further four-week ban on evictions, meaning no renters will have been evicted for six months. “However, it is right that the most egregious cases, for example those involving anti-social behaviour or domestic abuse perpetrators, begin to be heard in court again; and so when courts reopen, landlords will once again be able to progress these priority cases.” To send feedback, e-mail emma.rosser@egi.co.uk or tweet @EmmaARosser or @estatesgazette
