Ikea’s BoKlok to bring 200 modular homes to Bristol

Bristol City Council will partner with Ikea, Skanska’s BoKlok and Homes England to deliver 200 modular homes in the south of the city. The Swedish offsite housing developer will look to acquire the council site on Airport Road, with additional funds from Homes England, to deliver the homes over the next five years. BoKlok is a Swedish housing concept developed by construction company Skanska and home furnishing retailer Ikea. The scheme will offer 140 homes for market sale, with the remaining 60 available for social rent and shared ownership, which the council will seek to acquire. Subject to planning consent, construction is expected to start in autumn 2020. The proposals are part of the council-led Bristol Housing Festival, which is trialling offsite housing solutions across the city. Jonas Spangenberg, chief executive of BoKlok, said: “When we entered the UK market we pinpointed Bristol as a key city, and now we are excited to move ahead with the plans for Airport Road. We are here to stay for the long-term, making it possible for more people with average incomes to realise their dream of owning their home.” Gregor Craig, president and chief executive at Skanska UK, said: “Skanska’s purpose is to build for a better society, and BoKlok will broaden our offer in the UK with sustainable, quality homes at a low cost.” BoKlok has more than 20 years of experience and has developed around 12,000 homes in Sweden, Finland and Norway. The developer expanded to the UK this year, seeking to work with councils and local housing companies in the South to unlock their land for residential development.
