House prices fall for fifth month in a row

House prices have fallen for a fifth consecutive month, and by more than economists were expecting.

The average price of a house in the UK fell by 0.6% in January compared with December, down to £258,297, according to Nationwide. Prices are now 3% below the summer peak.

It is the longest period of successive falls since February 2009.
