House prices fall despite hopes for autumn lift

Homeowners hoping for an autumn bounce in property values have been left deflated after the biggest fall in September prices for four years.

This time of year has traditionally led to a boost, although the trend has weakened this decade.

Rightmove, the online property portal, said that the asking price of homes coming to the market had fallen by £3,660, or 1.2%, this month. Worst hit was London, which was down 2.9% as the market continued to cool.
