Homeownership among the young has declined by half in a generation in parts of Britain leaving many millennials renting sub-standard properties.
The proportion of young families who own their home has fallen from 50% in Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton to 20% since 1990 and from 50 to 26% in Greater Manchester. There were similar falls in the southeast and Yorkshire.
Inner London has always had lower home ownership but this is now mirrored across London, with only one in six parents aged between 25 and 34 owning their home.
