Retail sales bounced back to a nine-month high after a lacklustre start to the year.
The CBI’s distributive sales survey found volumes were “well above average for the time of the year” as the summer sun brought more people out on to the high street. The retail sales balance jumped to +32 in June from May’s reading of +11, beating all forecasts.
Howard Archer, chief economic adviser at the EY Item Club, said the survey “adds to evidence that the UK consumer has perked up significantly in the second quarter”.
