Have your say on RICS self-regulation and governing council

Since the RICS independent standards and regulation board’s mass resignation in June, questions around the main body’s stance on self-regulation have dominated industry conversations. RICS fellow Anthony Walker is among the industry figures questioning whether it is time for external oversight. However, the RICS maintains self-regulation is the “best framework” for the profession. The SRB’s walkout, which stemmed from a row over the main body’s strategy, has also cast the spotlight on the structure of the RICS governing council, which oversees the board. Events unfolded as the Levelling-up and Regeneration Bill advances through the parliamentary process. It includes clause 221, specifically relating to the RICS and proposing explicit powers for the secretary of state to appoint an independent person to review the organisation. EG wants to know if you think the RICS should continue to self-regulate, whether the government should have greater involvement and if the GC’s existing structure should change.
