Merseyside developer Langtree, Taylor Wimpey, Tesco and St Helens Rugby League club have won planning consent for a major mixed-use regeneration scheme in St Helens, including a £25m, 18,000-capacity stadium. The plans will see a new stadium for the Super League team known locally as ‘Saints’ and a Tesco Extra supermarket built on a derelict 46-acre former glass manufacturing site on the edge of the town. That in turn will allow the town’s existing Tesco outlet, on Chalon Way in the town centre, to be redeveloped as alternative retail. Taylor Wimpey will replace the club’s historic Knowsley Road stadium – the team’s home for 116 years – with residential space. Plans will now go forward for regional government approval. To date, the most significant objector to the plans has been rival supermarket chain Morrisons, which has an outlet in the town. Plans could also be threatened by a condition placed on preserving an historic element of the former United Glass site. St Helens’ chairman Eamonn McManus said: “This is wonderful news for the Club, its supporters and for the town of St Helens. “We now look forward to a similar positive outcome from the Government Office for the North West and would urge all to continue with expressions of constructive support for a project so critical to the future of the Club and of the town.” daniel.cunningham@rbi.co.uk
