GLA provides funding for workspace development at Royal Docks
An initiative to turn empty sheds at London’s Royal Docks into affordable workspace has received backing from the GLA.
The Factory Project aims to develop space for creative businesses at the docks, E16, and is being managed by Projekt, an affordable workspace developer. The venture has received £2.8m from the £13m Royal Docks Good Growth Fund, which will be matched by Projekt.
Projekt chief executive Nick Hartwright said: “Industrial space in this area of London is vital and the Royal Docks have traditionally played a huge role in this sector of the capital’s economy… More and more workspace is being lost in favour of residential developments but The Factory will help regenerate the Royal Docks while still creating much-needed space for local charities and communities to use for years to come.”

Jules Pipe, deputy mayor for planning, regeneration and skills, said: “The project will give much-needed support to innovative local businesses and charities – a landmark moment in our work to drive the wider regeneration of the area in partnership with the community.”
The Factory Project has been set up as a social enterprise repurposing 100,000 sq ft of buildings and yards owned by Tate & Lyle Sugars into affordable workspace, rehearsal and production rooms, free workspace for local charities, film and TV studios and a 5,000 sq ft community and events space.
The Royal Docks Good Growth Fund was launched by the mayor of London and the mayor of Newham last summer.
