Houses in England are less affordable and of a lower quality than those in every other European country, according to a study by the Home Builders Federation.
England is the “most difficult place in the developed world to find a home”, its report has claimed, adding that the country also has the most acute shortage of homes.
The report has found that a fifth of English households, or 11.3m people, spend more than 40% of their take-home pay on housing costs. That is more than double the European Union average of 8% of households and more than anywhere else in Europe.
