St Joseph’s House was used as a care home for 154 years. The religious order instructed JLL to sell the site, as a result of a shortage of nuns able to provide care for the elderly.
S1 Developments acquired the site last summer for £6m, following a competitive bidding process, beating interest from 17 other potential buyers.
The site is considered no longer suitable for modern care home requirements, prohibited by the cost of upgrades.
Initially, the former care home was viewed as a potential for residential redevelopment. But that plan was dropped due to access constraints and the site layout, and outweighed by suitability for the student clusters and demand from local universities.
