Edinburgh set to reject plans for 900 homes
Edinburgh Council’s planning committee is set to refuse development of 900 homes across the city.
The move comes as two separate applications, lodged by different developers in opposite parts of the city, have been named contrary to the spatial strategy of the Edinburgh local development plan.
West Craigs and Wheatley Homes East seek planning permission in principle for a residential development, comprising 500 homes, retail spaces, active travel routes and open space in the western part on the city.
The proposed development site measures 58.8 acres, of which 40.5% comprises open space and woodland. As such, the jv has also proposed to keep 23.8 acres of the total site area as open space through planting around 1,820 new trees and creating a 7.4-acre public park on the site, as well as two smaller parks of 1.2 acres.
Despite this, planning officers have said the proposal is not consistent with green belt objectives stated in the LDP and have recommended that the planning committee would refuse this application.
At the other end of the city, Barratt and David Wilson Homes have plans to bring forward 400 homes, ranging from one to five bedrooms, on a 47.7-acre site located to the south of Frogston Road East. Up to 35% affordable housing is proposed to be provided on the site. The application also features a community hub, public space, a transport hub, 10,225 sq ft of commercial space, and 2,691 sq ft of retail space.
However, planning officers have found the proposal would undermine the plan-led system as it comprises agricultural land. Therefore, the committee has advised that the proposal is unacceptable.
