Public confidence in the economy remains close to 50-year lows, despite a slight improvement in sentiment this month.
December’s score on the GfK consumer confidence index of -42 was a two-point improvement on the previous month. However, the survey has measured -40 or below for eight months in a row, the first time this has happened since the research series began in 1974.
The Federation of Small Businesses, Britain’s largest employers’ group, described consumer confidence yesterday as “near rock-bottom”.
