Canary Wharf Group’s Montgomery Square up for second vote

Planning officers at Tower Hamlets Council have recommended approval for Canary Wharf Group’s revamp at Montgomery Square and Water Street, E14, for the second time. The committee rejected plans in October to renovate the public realm, construct a retail pavilion at Montgomery Square, and fully close Water Street to create a linear plaza and public space.  The committee refused the proposals on the grounds that the road closures would adversely affect local businesses, cause traffic jams and inconvenience residents. CWG has since submitted amended plans to address the concerns of members, and the committee has now recommended approval for planning permission with conditions and planning obligations. The proposed amendments include removing the complete closure of Water Street to traffic and allowing public vehicles to travel in a west to east direction and amending the timing of the closure of Water Street. The development committee will discuss the plans for approval later next week. CWG submitted the planning application in July to build a flexible event space and a three-storey 5,873 sq ft timber-framed retail pavilion alongside public realm. If approved, the project is expected to be finished by late next year. Image © HTA Design
