Canary Wharf Group’s Montgomery Square revamp rejected

Canary Wharf Group’s proposals to revamp the public realm and build a retail pavilion at Montgomery Square and Water Street, E14, have been rejected by the planning committee at Tower Hamlets Council. The committee refused the proposals on the grounds that road closures on Water Street would affect local businesses and cause traffic congestion, cause problems for local residents and have noise impacts. Initially, the committee members were evenly split between approving and rejecting the proposal. However, the chair highlighted the potential negative impact that the closure of Water Street could have on local residents and businesses, which ultimately swung the decision. Planning officers had recommended approval. CWG submitted the planning application in July to build a flexible event space and a three-storey 5,873 sq ft timber-framed retail pavilion alongside public realm. A spokesperson for CWG said: “Naturally we are disappointed with this decision but remain committed to delivering this project and will work with our partners and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to find a solution.” Image © HTA Design
