Cain sets the stage for Shoreditch scheme with Shakespeare museum
An investment consortium led by Cain International has raised the curtain on plans for its 2.3-acre development in Shoreditch, EC2, with a new museum dedicated to Shakespeare.
The mixed-use scheme, called the Stage, will be anchored by the Museum of Shakespeare. The venue will measure 19,000 sq ft, with creative studio Bompas & Parr appointed to create the museum in collaboration with Museum of London Archaeology and Historic England.
The museum is expected to open in 2024. The venue will contain archaeological remains of the Curtain Theatre, where Henry V and Romeo and Juliet premiered.

The consortium also comprises McCourt Global, Galliard Homes, Vanke, Investec and the Estate Office Shoreditch.
The wider 2.3-acre development includes a 37–storey residential tower with 412 flats, two office buildings and more than 60,000 sq ft of retail and restaurant space, as well as more than an acre of new public realm.
Jonathan Goldstein, chief executive of Cain International, said: “The Museum of Shakespeare will bring a unique proposition of culture, entertainment and history to the heart of Shoreditch.”
Harry Parr, co-founder of Bompas & Parr, said the studio will work on creating a new cultural attraction at a site with “rich history and potential”.
Parr added: “The Museum of Shakespeare will be the most ambitious project that Bompas & Parr has undertaken, and is in line with our mission to create location-based experiences that make the capital a more interesting place and a city unrivalled in its cultural importance and reputation for world-class entertainment. This will be Shakespeare as you have never experienced it before.”
