Prime minister Rishi Sunak was there to break ground on the development with Blackstone co-founder Stephen Schwarzman and US ambassador to the UK Jane Hartley, who said the decision to develop the site was a “vote of confidence in the British economy”.
Blackstone agreed to occupy the redeveloped Lansdowne House in October 2022. The new building is being developed by CO-RE and designed by architect AHMM.
Planning permission was secured in November 2020 for the redevelopment, and construction is slated to be completed by 2028.
The 10-floor scheme, which aims to set “new standards in sustainability” will potentially house more than 1,800 seats, along with 14,000 sq ft of shops on the ground floor.
The deal won the London Deal of the Year award at 2023’s EG Awards.
Schwarzman said Blackstone is “proud to be one of the largest foreign investors in the UK” and that it celebrates its “next phase of growth after more than 20 years at Berkeley Square”.
He added: “Our expanded headquarters at the redeveloped Lansdowne House will be an important part of our story as we continue to build great companies across Europe.”
Bradley Baker, chief executive of CO—RE, said: “Blackstone are providing a huge boost to the London and West End economy through their major investment in Mayfair.
“At their new headquarters they will enjoy a building that raises the standard of future office design and gives a new sense of place to the historic Berkeley Square.”
