For many years Airbnb has been considered the biggest threat to the hotel industry, but now the giant of the home-sharing market is looking to become a hotel operator itself.
Airbnb has teamed up with RXR, a property developer, to convert ten floors of a skyscraper in the Rockefeller Centre area of New York into “high-end apartment-style suites”.
The apartments are described by Airbnb as a “new category of urban lodging”, but essentially they are hotel rooms with kitchens and living rooms that can be booked only through the company’s platform.
