50,000 jobs lost as high street hit by Brexit and online rivals

Britain’s largest businesses have cut 50,000 jobs in the last six months as high street shops struggle against online rivals and other companies suffer from consumers tightening their belts.

Most of the jobs were lost in the retail industry, with big companies such as Toys R Us and Maplin collapsing into administration and others, including the department store chain House of Fraser, planning to close dozens of shops to survive.
