Q   What notice, if any, is required of an assured shorthold tenant who decides to leave some time after expiry of the fixed term granted by the tenancy agreement?
A   Subject to the four-week minimum imposed by section 5 of the Protection from Eviction Act 1977, the tenant, now occupying under a statutory periodic tenancy, must give a notice equal to one period of that tenancy: see Landlords can rest assured, Estates Gazette 12 January 2002, p99, explaining how the problem came before the Court of Appeal in Laine v Cadwallader [2002] PLSCS 54.
