Unite gets green light for 913-bed scheme
Tower Hamlets planning committee has approved Unite’s 913-bedroom student accommodation development on Middlesex Street, London, E1.
Development will see towers of up to 24 storeys with 4,600 sq ft of exhibition space, 1,300 sq ft of incubator floorspace, and 15,000 sq ft of office space.
The scheme is located on the parcel of land bound by 3-12 Goulston Street, and 4-6 and 14-22 Middlesex Street, close to Aldgate East station.

The scheme is located on the parcel of land bound by 3-12 Goulston Street, and 4-6 and 14-22 Middlesex Street, close to Aldgate East station.
The planning process was supported by Kings College London, with a view to securing a long-term nomination agreement. It will now go to the GLA for the final rubber-stamping, which is expected in the new few weeks.
Nick Hayes, Unite Students Group property director, said: “London is the UK’s largest student market, but also one of the most difficult in which to deliver new supply. Middlesex Street creates new supply in a strategically important location where there is a shortage of affordable, high quality accommodation.”
Unite acquired the site in 2016. The scheme has a total development cost of £195m and a projected yield of 6.25%. It is expected to be delivered for the start of the 2021/22 academic year.
